Airbnb just rolled out new rules that limit how much cleaning hosts can ask of guests at checkout, and I couldn’t be happier about it. No more stripping beds, washing dishes or starting laundry on the last morning of a trip.
My take is simple: vacation should feel like vacation. Cleaning is something you leave at home.
What’s changing on November 20
Starting November 20, 2026, Airbnb’s updated house rules policy bars hosts from asking guests to do chores a cleaner would normally handle, like stripping beds, washing dishes, starting laundry or hauling trash away. Simple requests, like locking up, are still fine. The cleaning fee covers a standard turnover, and hosts can’t charge guests for skipping checkout tasks.
I’ve never asked my guests to clean, and they’ve never let me down
Here’s the thing: I agree with every one of these rules, and I’ve never implied that my guests should do any of these chores. No checkout to-do list. No laundry instructions. No guilt trips.
And yet, almost without exception, my guests treat my home like their own. I’ve been incredibly lucky to host the very best people, and I don’t take that for granted for a second.
The real challenge? The cleaners
If there’s a pain point in this business, it isn’t the guests. It’s the cleaners.
I once worked with a cleaner who charged me $50 every time a guest left garbage in the house or didn’t put the towels in the wash. Fifty dollars! Every single time.
Think about that for a second. Taking out the trash and washing towels is the turnover. It’s exactly what a cleaner is there to do. Airbnb now says plainly that hosts can’t penalize guests for skipping chores like these, and a cleaner shouldn’t be penalizing hosts for them either.
Needless to say, she’s no longer helping me with my home.
I found a unicorn: Emma Mason of Sweeping Southern
The good news is that I found a unicorn. Emma Mason of Sweeping Southern and I are in lockstep: the guest experience is number one, always. Cleaning is something that should be left at home, not packed for vacation.
Working with someone who shares that philosophy makes all the difference. My guests get to relax right up until checkout, and I know my home is in good hands. If you’re a host looking for a cleaning partner who truly gets it, Emma is the real deal.
Vacation is for vacationing
Airbnb’s new rules put into writing what great hosts already believe: guests come to rest, not to work. To everyone who has stayed with me and treated my home with such care, thank you.
And to my fellow hosts: let your guests enjoy every last minute of their stay. Leave the cleaning to the pros.
